Mumbai Weather: Heavy Rains Continue To Batter City, Commuters Battle Flooded Roads, Traffic Snarls

Incessant rainfall in Mumbai has brought the city to its knees as several parts were left reeling under waterlogging. Commuters were seen facing issues due to traffic congestion.

Mumbai Weather Update: Heavy rainfall lashed parts of Maharashtra's capital city Mumbai on Thursday. The continuous downpour in the city has left it reeling under waterlogging, which has disrupted normal life. The temperature in the city was recorded at 25 degrees Celsius on Thursday, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Mumbai has been receiving heavy rainfall from the last few weeks and complaints of waterlogging in several parts. Waterlogging was witnessed in several parts of Mumbai on Thursday also.

Amid the incessant rain in the city, traffic congestion and slow vehicular movement were witnessed on the Eastern Express Highway, causing problems for commuters who braved continuous showers.

  • Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that Vihar Lake, one of the seven lakes supplying water to the entire Mumbai area, started overflowing at around 3:50 am today as the area continues to receive heavy rainfall.
  • At least four people lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Pune on Thursday amid heavy downpours and incessant overnight rain, as per a Hindustan Times report. Water entered several houses in Pune.
  • Amid heavy downpours in parts of Maharashtra, the IMD has issued a red alert in Madhya Maharashtra for Thursday, predicting extremely heavy rainfall in the region. The weather office has also issued an orange alert for the region for the next two days, July 26 and 27.
  • Raigad Police has said that the small bridge between Kasbe Shivthar and Samarth Shivthar in Mahad MIDC police station limits was washed away after heavy rains. There is no passenger traffic in between, the lands of local farmers are on the other side of the bridge. However, the road has been barricaded as a safety measure.
  • Following incessant rainfall in Mumbai, flight operations were severely affected as several flights were diverted and cancelled. Indigo Airlines issued a travel advisory. "Continuous and heavy rains over #Mumbai are causing periodic delays in flight schedules. While we strive to give you real-time updates, we kindly ask you to check your flight status before leaving for the airport," the advisory read.
  • Air India has said that it will offer full refunds or a one-time complimentary rescheduling for bookings confirmed for travel on July 25, 2024, for all the flights diverted and cancelled due to rain.
  • Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said that it has been withdrawing a 10% water cut to Thane City, Bhiwandi, and Outside City Division Grampanchyats, where water is supplied by BMC, from 29th July. The reservoirs supplying water to Mumbai are experiencing heavy rains, resulting in a steady increase in water storage.
