Bengaluru News: Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, recently visited the revered Raghavendra Swamy Mutt in Bengaluru, Karnataka, accompanied by his wife, Akshata Murty, and her parents, Infosys co-founder Narayan Murthy and philanthropist Sudha Murty.

Videos on social media showed the family attending the aarti together. Notably, Akshata had visited the mutt in February this year with her daughters, Anoushka and Krishna, and her parents while being the First Lady of Britain. Her Bengaluru visit had garnered a lot of reactions.

Rishi Sunak On His Indian Roots And Being A 'Proud Hindu'

The first British Prime Minister of Hindu origin, he has spoken openly about his cultural roots. "I am hugely proud of my Indian roots and my connections to India...being a proud Hindu means I will always have a connection to India and the people of India," Sunak once remarked.

Sunak, who was born and raised in Southampton, England, has ancestral ties to India that have long resonated with Indians. Last year, he visited the Akshardham Temple in Delhi with Akshata, where they performed rituals and interacted with the temple’s swamis during the G20 Summit visit.

On the last weekend of the UK general election campaign, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty had visited London's iconic BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir, popularly known as Neasden Temple.

In 2023, Sunak had attended a Ram Katha at Cambridge University on India's Independence Day, stating, "I am here not as a Prime Minister but as a Hindu." 

In 2022, Sunak rose to leadership as the Conservative Party’s head, succeeding Liz Truss after her brief 45-day tenure.

However, his tenure ended when the Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer, secured a sweeping victory, bringing an end to the Conservative Party’s 14-year governance. Labour secured 412 seats, leaving the Conservatives, also known as Tories, with just 121 seats in the House of Commons.
