Stock Market Today: Sensex, Nifty Trade Flat Amid Expected Volatility In The Day

Stock Market Today: Indian equities have faced continued pressure for several months, with the Nifty 50 set to record its fifth straight month of losses—the longest losing streak since 1996

Indian equity markets opened slightly higher on Thursday but quickly flattened as investors anticipated increased volatility ahead of the monthly derivatives expiry. With the Nifty 50's February contract nearing expiration, traders braced for fluctuations as positions were either closed or rolled over to the March series.

At 10:10 am, the Sensex was up 7.5 points, or 0.01 per cent, at 74,609, while the Nifty was down 4.90 points, or 0.02 per cent, to 22,542.

Indian equities have faced continued pressure for several months, with the Nifty 50 set to record its fifth straight month of losses—the longest losing streak since 1996. Both major benchmarks have dropped by nearly 14 per cent from their all-time highs in September 2024.

Expert Comment

Dr V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, stated that while a broad market rally requires signs of growth and earnings recovery, investors should focus on individual stocks (micros) rather than broader economic trends (macros) in the near term.

"Plenty of stock-specific action ahead, despite headwinds from FII selling and Trump tariffs news. Sharp correction in the broader market has made the valuations in certain segments attractive. Defence stocks, which had run up too much too fast, have corrected sharply making their valuations attractive for long-term investors," he said.

Foreign Institutional Investors Updates

In FY25, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold stocks worth Rs 3,87,976 crores in the cash market. Interestingly, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) have more than offset this selling by purchasing stocks worth Rs 5,55,519 crores. Despite this, the market has been trending downwards. It’s possible that the actions of High Net-Worth Individuals (HNIs), Ultra High Net-Worth Individuals (UHNIs), and family offices, which are not captured in DII data, are also influencing the market. This group of savvy investors may have been on the sell side, as they tend to follow fundamentals, which have been weakening due to the cyclical slowdown in GDP growth and corporate earnings.
