Gold prices in Kolkata moved up on July 21, with the rate for 24-karat gold reaching Rs 10,015 per gram and 22-karat gold priced at Rs 9,180 per gram. This upward movement aligns with broader national trends, as several Indian cities reported a rise in gold rates.

India, which ranks as the second-largest gold consumer globally after China, heavily depends on imports to meet its gold demand. A minimal portion of the market is supplied through recycled gold. As the yellow metal is priced in US dollars on global exchanges, any fluctuation in the rupee–dollar exchange rate has a significant impact on the final domestic price paid by Indian consumers.

Beyond currency movements, other local elements also influence pricing. Import duties, the Goods and Services Tax (GST), and varying state taxes all contribute to regional differences in gold costs.
