New Delhi: A traditional festival known as Vat Savitri or Vat Purnima Chavan is observed all throughout India in areas like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Gujarat, etc. On this day, women fast and pray for the longevity and good health of their husbands. In Northern India, the Jyeshtha Amavasya or dark moon day is when devotees observe their fast, whilst, in Southern India, the Jyeshtha Purnima or full moon day is when they do so.

Amavasya Tithi will begin this year on May 18 at 9.42 PM and terminate on May 19 at 9.22 PM. Additionally, Vat Savitri Purnima will be observed on Saturday, 03 June 2023.
Vat Savitri Vrat 2023: Puja Vidhi
- Hindu married women wear clean clothes and begin the Vat Savitri Vrat on Trayodashi, applying sesame paste and amla on the first day of the fast.
- Additionally, they consume the roots of the Banyan tree during the fast
- They also paint a Banyan tree on wood with turmeric paste and worship that for the next three days.
- On the fourth day, after waking up early, they take a ritual bath and establish the idols of Satyavan-Savitri and Yamraj at the banyan tree, donning full bridal garments and offering prayers to the banyan tree and Savitri
- They also sprinkle vermillion around the tree and tie yellow or red coloured sacred threads around the trunk of the tree.
- Then, they move around the banyan tree seven times and chant prayers
- Lastly, the fast is broken on the Amavasya or Purnima day by having the prasad which includes wet pulses, mango, jack fruits, banana, and lemon.

According to Hindu mythology, the Vat (Banyan) tree symbolises the "Trimurtis," or Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, and Lord Shiva. People who worship a banyan tree are considered to be fortunate.
