According to Puranic beliefs and the Shiva Purana, the tradition is to worship Lord Shiva on the day of every monthly Shivratri fast during the four prahars (four parts) of the night. It is believed that Lord Shiva's marriage to Goddess Parvati took place during the night of Chaturdashi.
