Karwa Chauth 2023: Moonrise And Other Key Timings For Hyderabad Observers

For those observing Karwa Chauth in Hyderabad, read on to know the timings that are of paramount importance to ensure the faithful and precise observance of the festival.

Karwa Chauth, also known as Karaka Chaturthi, is a cherished and revered Hindu festival in India, celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm. This significant observance usually falls in October or November, aligning with the fourth day following the full moon in the Hindu month of Kartik, as per the Gregorian calendar. In 2023, Karwa Chauth will be observed on November 1.

Married women play a central role in this festival, dedicating a day-long fast during which they abstain from both food and drink. Their fast is a heartfelt prayer for the long and prosperous lives of their husbands, accompanied by fervent wishes for their safety and well-being.

Before sunrise, a special meal called Sargi is prepared by mothers-in-law for their daughters-in-law. Sargi is a nourishing spread that includes sweet dishes, fruits, nuts, and sometimes fried delicacies. Women who are fasting rely on this meal to sustain them throughout the day.

Karwa Chauth brings out the traditional and vibrant attire in women, often choosing sarees and suits. A distinguishing feature of this day is the application of henna, or mehndi, on their hands and feet. Mehndi serves not only as a decorative element but also symbolizes love and devotion.

In the evening, a special prayer ceremony is conducted at temples or community centers for married women. This involves the singing of hymns and the recounting of the Karwa Chauth story. Traditional oil lamps known as diyas are lit, and prayers are dedicated to deities, primarily Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Lord Ganesha. Throughout the fast, women gather to share their experiences and offer mutual support.

The most eagerly awaited moment of Karwa Chauth is the moonrise. After the evening puja, the moon graces the night sky. Women observe the Moon through a sieve ('chalni') or a plate ('thali') illuminated by a lamp. Following this, they gaze at their husband's face through the same sieve, symbolically connecting husband and wife through the moon.
