Why is Ganesh Utsav Celebrated for 10 Days?
It is believed that Sage Vyasa requested Lord Ganesha to write the Mahabharata. Lord Ganesha wrote continuously for 10 days without stopping. Due to the constant writing at one place, dust and grime accumulated on his body. On the 10th day, Ganesha bathed in the Saraswati River to clean the accumulated dust and grime. Since then, the immersion of Ganesha's idol takes place on the 10th day of Ganesh Utsav.
Another belief is that during these 10 days, Lord Ganesha travels on Earth, where his devotees welcome him and invite him into their homes. During this period, Ganesha’s idols are installed in homes and public places. The festival concludes on the 10th day, known as Anant Chaturdashi, when the idol is immersed, and devotees bid farewell, seeking his blessings for his return next year.
How Did Lord Ganesha Come into Being?
Lord Ganesha was created from the dirt on Goddess Parvati's body. She infused life into the statue and assigned Ganesha to guard her chamber. When Lord Shiva tried to enter the chamber, Ganesha, unaware of Shiva's identity, blocked his way. Angered, Shiva severed Ganesha's head. Distraught, Parvati pleaded with Shiva to restore her son. Shiva then replaced Ganesha's head with that of an elephant, granting him a new life.
