Andhra CM-Elect Chandrababu Naidu Says Amaravati Will Be Sole Capital

On June 2, 2024, Hyderabad ceased to be the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

A day before his swearing-in as Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, TDP supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu made a decisive announcement that Amaravati will be the sole capital of the state. This declaration was made during a joint meeting of TDP, BJP, and Janasena legislators, where Naidu was unanimously elected as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

“In our government, there will be no games under the guise of three capitals. Our capital is Amaravati. Amaravati is the capital,” Naidu asserted, according to a report on PTI, reaffirming his commitment to his long-standing vision for the state's capital.

As the first Chief Minister of bifurcated Andhra Pradesh from 2014 to 2019, Naidu initially proposed Amaravati as the capital city. However, this vision was halted in 2019 when the TDP lost power to Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), which introduced a controversial plan to establish three capitals across the state. Naidu's recent election victory and his firm stance on Amaravati signal a return to his original plan for a unified capital.

The NDA alliance, of TDP, BJP and JanaSena, swept the recent simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections, securing a commanding majority with 164 assembly seats and 21 Lok Sabha seats, which has rejuvenated the Amaravati capital project.

Hyderabad No Longer Joint Capital Of Andhra Pradesh & Telangana

Earlier, in a significant development for the region, Hyderabad has ceased to be the joint capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as of June 2, 2024.

According to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, Hyderabad was designated as the joint capital for a period of 10 years following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. With the completion of this period, Hyderabad is now solely the capital of Telangana.
