Andhra Pradesh Rains: Three Kids & An Old Woman Killed, Six Trapped As Building Collapse In Anantapur Dist

The under-construction building fell on two adjoining houses, leaving 15 people trapped under the rubble

Hyderabad: Heavy rains lash southern parts of Andhra Pradesh, there has been wreckage in three districts -- Chittoor, Anantapur and Kadapa -- since the cyclone made landfall in the coastal region of the state. On Saturday, four persons, including three children and an aged woman, were killed when an under-construction building collapsed in Kadiri town of Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh. Rescue work was on to save six persons trapped under the rubble, officials said.

The under-construction building fell on two adjoining houses, leaving 15 people trapped under the rubble. Rescue workers pulled out the bodies of a woman and three children. They also rescued six persons.

The remaining six persons were trapped under the debris and were believed to be alive. Rescue workers from the municipality, police, fire services, and other departments were trying to remove the debris and rescue the trapped persons.

Officials believe that heavy rains lashing the region since Friday damaged the under-construction structure leading to the tragedy. Additional Superintendent of Police Ramakrishna Prasad and Revenue Divisional Officer Venkat Reddy were supervising rescue and relief operations.

Annamayya reservoir washed away 

Meanwhile, on Friday Annamayya reservoir at Rajampet in Kadapa district was washed away leading to a sudden increase in the floods to the nearby villages and as a result submerging the villages. Brimming Cheyeru river became a threat to the surrounding villages in Nadalur and Rajampet regions.

About 15 people in Mandapally, Akepadu and Nandalur have been washed away in the floods. The officials on Saturday continue the rescue operations reportedly to find out more people missing. Authorities said that the casualties would be of more numbers as the rescue operations are still underway. According to a report, at least a kilometre long railways track between Rajampet and Nadalur was washed away by the floodwater.
