Tomato Prices Touch Rs 150 In UP's Moradabad
The incessant rainfall in parts of the country and the rise in fuel prices is believed to be the reason behind this surge in prices.
The price of tomatoes has touched Rs 150 in Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad as prices in the rest of the country also continue to surge. It is being sold at Rs 129 per kg in Delhi's Safal store. Authorities earlier said that the price will go back to 'normal' within a week.
A customer in Delhi said, "We have stopped eating tomatoes. Tomatoes are being sold at Rs 129 per kg. The government should think about it."

As per a PTI report, prices have reached as high as Rs 155 per kg across major cities. The report citing official data said that in metropolitan cities, the retail prices of tomatoes varied between Rs 58 and Rs 148 per kg.
Kolkata recorded the highest price at Rs 148 per kg, while Mumbai had the lowest at Rs 58 per kg. As per the data maintained by the consumer affairs ministry, the average all-India retail price was Rs 83.29 per kg, with a modal price of Rs 100 per kg, the report said.
Over the past two weeks, the supply of tomatoes from the producing states has experienced disruptions, primarily due to challenges in harvesting and transportation in the rainy season. The government has acknowledged that the recent surge in tomato prices is a seasonal occurrence, as prices tend to be higher during this period. However, it is anticipated that within the next 15 days, the prices will begin to stabilize, and within a month, they are expected to return to normal levels.
Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Piyush Goyal, while commenting on the prices of tomatoes skyrocketing in several states, on Sunday said that due to unseasonal rains, the prices of tomatoes have increased and as soon as tomatoes start arriving from Himachal Pradesh and some places of Karnataka, the prices will go down. He further added that if the prices of last year are compared to that of this year then there's not much of a difference, as reported by news agency ANI.
