Banarasi Paan, Langda Mango, 2 Oher Products Awarded Geographical Indication Tag

Banarasi paan and langda mango of Varanasi have finally been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag which signifies that products from a specific geographical location possess qualities that are due to that origin, reported news agency IANS. Along with Banarasi paan and langda mango Ramnagar Bhanta (Brinjal) and Adamchini Rice have also been awarded the GI tag.
On March 31, the GI Registry, Chennai, gave the tags to the two products from the region. The total number of products that have been awarded GI tags from the Kashi region now stands at 22.
The Uttar Pradesh government had filed GI applications for 20 state-based products during the Covid phase in collaboration with NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development).
Of these, 11 products -- including seven One District One Product (ODOP) and four products of Kashi region -- have received GI tag this year, reported the news agency.
Close to 20 lakh people of eastern Uttar Pradesh region and Varanasi are involved in making these GI products.
According to the news agency, the annual turnover of these products is pegged at Rs 25,500 crore. And by the end of the next month, the remaining nine products that include Banaras Lal Peda, Chiraigaon Gooseberry, Tirangi Barfi, Banarasi Thandai and Banaras Lal Bharwa Mirch will also be included in the country's intellectual property.
Earlier, 18 products from Kashi and the Purvanchal region had GI tags.
Banaras Brocade and Sarees, Handmade Bhadohi Carpets, Mirzapur Handmade Carpets, Banaras Metal Reposi Craft, Varanasi Gulabi Meenakari, Varanasi Wooden lacquerware and Toys, Nizamabad Black Patri, Banaras Glass Beads, Varanasi Softstone Jaali Work, Ghazipur Wall Hangig, Chunar Sandstone, Chunar Glaze Patari, Gorakhpur Terracotta Craft, Banaras Zardozi, Banaras Hand Block Print, Banaras Wood Carving, Mirzapur Brass Utensils and Mau Saree are some of the products that were earlier awarded GI tags.
