Chinese President Xi Jinping Arrives At Chennai For Informal Summit
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived here on Friday afternoon as part of his maiden two-day visit to the state to participate in the second informal summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Mamallapuram.
Xi will proceed to Mamallapuram, 50 km away, amid tight security by road, where he will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Xi's visit comes amid renewed strain in ties between India and China over the Kashmir issue. A joint statement issued after talks between President Xi and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday said China is paying "close attention" to the situation in the Kashmir and that it should be properly and peacefully resolved based on the UN Charter. The two-day informal visit will not witness the signing of any Memorandum of Understandings or agreements.
After completing his engagements in India, the Chinese President will be departing for Nepal on the second leg of his two-nation tour.
