Although there is no election scheduled in the northeastern states (apart from the autonomous council polls) in 2025, the region is likely to face challenges to peace and stability. This is especially true for the state of Manipur, which has been torn apart by ethnic violence between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo people since May 2023. The central government’s target to restore normalcy in strife-torn Manipur remains an uphill task, given the sharp polarisation of society along ethnic lines.
