Hyderabad: IIT Student From Odisha Dies By Suicide, Second Case In A Month

Mamitha Nayak, a 21-year-old student from Odisha, was found hanging in her hostel room on Monday night. She had joined M.Tech first year last month.

A student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Hyderabad, died by suicide in her hostel room allegedly due to mental stress. This is the second suicide of an IIT-Hyderabad student within a month.

According to an IANS report, Mamitha Nayak, a 21-year-old student from Odisha, was part of the M.Tech first year batch. On Monday night, her classmates found her hanging from the ceiling fan in her hostel room. They immediately alerted the hostel authorities, who then informed the Sangareddy rural police. Mamitha's body was then sent for an autopsy.

After investigation, police found a suicide letter in her room in which she wrote that no one was responsible for her death. In the note, she mentioned about "some financial problem in the family" and reportedly took the extreme step as she was depressed about it, PTI reported.

A case has been resgistered over the incident. IIT Hyderabad is situated in the Kandi area of Sangareddy district, near Hyderabad.

In another incident, D Karthik, a 21-year-old B. Tech (Mechanical) student in his second year, died by suicide by drowning in the sea at Visakhapatnam. He had left the campus on July 17, and his body was recovered from the Visakhapatnam beach on July 25. He was upset over being unable to clear backlogs in examinations. He hailed from Miryalguda in the Nalgonda district.

Four students of IIT Hyderabad have died by suicide in the past year. In September 2022, Megha Kapur, a 22-year-old from Rajasthan who had recently completed her B. Tech, took her life by jumping from a lodge in Sangareddy town near the campus. In August, G. Rahul, a second-year M.Tech student from Nandyal in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, also took the extreme step in his hostel room.
