Centre Directs Telangana Discoms To Clear Power Dues Of Rs 6,700 Crore To AP Genco Within 30 Days

AP Genco had supplied power to Telangana Discoms, post bifurcation from June 2, 2014 to June 10, 2017.

The Ministry of Power has directed the government of Telangana State Discoms to clear power dues of Rs 6,756.92 crore to AP Genco under Section 2 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.

"The Government of India, in the exercise of the powers granted in it under Section 92 of AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, hereby orders that the successor State of Telangana shall pay the appropriate sum to the successor State of Andhra Pradesh within a period of 30 days," said a government release.

"AP Genco had supplied power to Telangana Discoms, post bifurcation from June 2, 2014, to June 10, 2017. Representations have been received from the state of Andhra Pradesh that Telangana has not paid for the power supplied to that State from June 2, 2014 to June 10, 2017," the release further said.

The order stated that there is no dispute regarding the amount to be paid for the power dues, the principal amount being Rs 3,441.78 crores, and late payment surcharge being Rs 3,315.14 crore (up to July 31, 2022) — to be paid in addition to the principal amount as per the applicable provisions.

Every right of one party entails a corresponding duty, right and duty are co-joined and as such, Telangana must pay the power due to Andhra Pradesh for electricity supplied to them under the orders of the Govt of India issued under the Andhra Pradesh Recognization Act, 2014, said the directive.

Recently, CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to settle the long-standing conflict with the neighbouring state. The CM pleaded with the Prime Minister that Telangana has been tardy in paying its electricity debts even after agreeing to receive power from Andhra Pradesh.
