India's Focus On Semiconductors

The Indian government has been actively working to strengthen the country’s Semiconductor capabilities, aiming to achieve self-reliance in chip manufacturing. As part of this effort, the Indian Semiconductor Mission (ISM) was launched in December 2021, accompanied by a Rs 76,000-crore incentive scheme and a 50 percent subsidy on capital expenditure for setting up manufacturing facilities. Companies such as Micron, Tata-PSMC, CG Power, and Kaynes Technology have already announced plans to establish Semiconductor units in India.

Ahead of the event, Prime Minister Modi chaired a roundtable with Semiconductor industry leaders at his residence on September 10. The meeting was attended by representatives from prominent organisations including SEMI, Micron, NXP, PSMC, IMEC, Renesas, and others, as well as professors from Stanford University, University of California San Diego, and IIT.

During the session, Modi discussed India’s developmental goals, emphasising the importance of infrastructure, inclusive growth, and reducing compliance burdens to attract investment in manufacturing and innovation. He highlighted India’s potential to become a key player in the global Semiconductor supply chain.

Semicon India 2024 is poised to be a significant step in India's journey to becoming a major player in the global Semiconductor landscape, aligning with Modi’s vision of transforming India into a leading Semiconductor hub.
