Meta-owned platform Instagram has been known for the multimedia content that the users engage with on its platform. Earlier the strategy that Instagram followed to boost its engagement was to focus on longer videos but now it has changed its tactics. The platform is ready to go back to its roots, short videos. Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri confirmed that short videos aren't going anywhere and they represent Instagram’s core identity of connecting people with friends.

Instagram earlier started off as a photo-sharing app but soon the concept of reels and short videos exploded on the platform making it a much bigger part of future growth strategies than photo sharing. And it seems the content has now become its core identity.

Short Videos Connect More?

Mosseri believes that sharing short videos with friends fosters connections, a core element of Instagram’s identity. He conveyed this perspective in a video response to a creator's inquiry about the company’s stance on long-form video, to which Mosseri unequivocally replied in the negative. “Or for me, I see a highlight of an amazing soccer goal or trick, and I send it to someone who I know loves soccer as much as I do. So these things are about connecting with friends over your interests,” he explained in the video.

Hearing the Instagram chief discuss the role of short videos in the platform's identity is intriguing, and he illustrated this with a relatable example. 

Mosseri’s remarks on long-form video come as TikTok shifts its focus towards this format, investing heavily in longer content. While the rationale behind TikTok’s decision to compete with a giant like YouTube remains unclear, it’s a strategy only the platform and its executives fully understand.
