TN Rains 2021: Another Low-Pressure Area Forms Over Bay of Bengal As Heavy Rains Bring Kanyakumari To Standstill

Meanwhile, the already existing low-pressure area over north Tamil Nadu has become less marked on Saturday.

Chennai: Just as Tamil Nadu is limping back to normalcy after heavy rains that battered the state, India Meteorological Department said that a new low-pressure area is formed over the South Andaman sea and adjoining Thailand coast at 8.30 AM on Saturday.

In a bulletin by India Meteorological Department (IMD), the agency said, "The cyclonic circulation over Gulf of Thailand and neighbourhood concentrated into a low-pressure area over the south Andaman Sea and adjoining Thailand coast at 8.30 AM on November 13."

"It is likely to move West-Northwestward and concentrate into a depression over north Andaman sea and adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal by November 15. Then it's likely to continue to move West-Northwestwards, intensify further and reach near AP Coast around November 18," it said.

As a result of the existing and new low-pressure areas, the IMD predicted rainfall for the next four days in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli districts while heavy rains in parts of Salem, Delta districts, Nilgiris, Theni and Pudukottai on Saturday and Sunday. On November 15, heavy rainfall is predicted in Theni, Dindigul, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Puducherry and Karaikal. For the next two days on November 16 and 17, parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will receive mild showers, said IMD.

For the next 24 hours, Chennai will remain cloudy with mild showers in parts of the city, said IMD

On Saturday, normal life was disrupted in Kanyakumari due to the heavy rainfall. Kanyakumari recorded 14 cm followed by Thakkalai, Surakodu, Sivalogam and Nagercoil recording rainfall between 13-10 cm on Saturday. The NDRF has been rushed for rescue operations and several areas are inundated in the rains.
