Tamil Nadu: CM Stalin Assesses Situation As Heavy Rain Causes Waterlogging, Schools Shut in 8 Districts

A 30-year-old tree was uprooted near Tharangambadi on Wednesday morning affecting vehicle movements. However, firefighters team immediately reached the spot and cleared the tree.

Intense downpours on Tuesday led to waterlogging in certain areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The Northeast Monsoon, causing low-pressure in the Bay of Bengal, has resulted in widespread heavy rainfall in recent days. On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu CM also took stock of the situation in Chennai. The heavy rainfall prompted the closure of schools in 8 districts including the capital and Cuddalore.

According to ANI, " Amid heavy rainfall in Mayiladuthurai district, a 30-year-old tree uprooted near Tharangambadi, early morning today, affecting vehicle movements. Tharangampadi firefighters team immediately reached the spot and cleared the Tharangampadi- Mayiladuthurai road."

According to PTI, Lakes overflow in Chennai, Chengalpattu and Kanchipuram amid heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu.

Chennai Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade and Tiruvallur Collector Prabhushankar declared a school holiday on November 15 due to heavy rainfall.

The district administration of Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Cuddalore also declared a holiday due to the rains.

On Tuesday, IMD said, "Under the influence of yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation over Andaman-Nicobar Islands and adjoining areas of Andaman Sea & Southeast Bay of Bengal, a Low Pressure Area has formed at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 14th November 2023 over Southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining areas and lay at 0830 hrs IST over the same region."

It is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a Depression over westcentral Bay of Bengal on 15th November, 2023, it said.
