Tamil Nadu Stands 3rd In Chargesheeting Rate Of Cases Registered In 2020: NCRB Report

For crimes related to Indian Penal Code, Tamil Nadu reported 1,85,912 crimes in 2018, 1,68,116 crimes in 2019 but saw an increase of a whopping 8,91,700 cases in 2020.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu recorded the third highest number of charge-sheeting rates under Indian Penal Code after Gujarat and Kerala, according to the report released by National Crime Records Bureau on Monday.  The report said, Gujarat charge-sheeted 97.1% of the cases, followed by Kerala which chargesheeted 94.7% of the cases and Tamil Nadu chargesheeting 91.7% of the cases. 

For crimes related to Indian Penal Code, Tamil Nadu reported 1,85,912 crimes in 2018, 1,68,116 crimes in 2019 but saw an increase of a whopping 8,91,700 cases in 2020. However, most of the 8.90 lakh cases were chargesheeted taking the total charge sheeting rate of the state to 91.7, as per NCB. Gujarat reported 3,81,849 cases and chargesheeted 97.1% of the cases.

Meanwhile, NCRB overall saw a 28% jump in registration of cases in 2020 compared to the previous year of 2019. The report said, there was a major increase in the cases registered under disobedience to order duly promulgated by Public Servant (Sec. 188 IPC). From 29,469 cases in 2019, there was a jump to 6,12,179 cases registered in 2020 and under

‘Other IPC Crimes’ from 2,52,268 cases in 2019 to 10,62,399 cases in 2020 due to the pandemic. The report said, all these cases were primarily reported as crimes arising out of violations of Covid-19 norms.

There was a 1% increase in the number of murder and 19.3% decrease in the numer of kidnapping and abduction cases. Meanwhile, the report also showed an increase of 8.5% of cases under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and 7.5% of cases under criminal intimidation.
