Six Fishermen From Tamil Nadu Arrested By Sri Lankan Navy For Crossing IMBL

All the arrests have also come at a time when there's severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka. 

Chennai: Sri Lankan Navy arrested six fishermen from Tamil Nadu who ventured into the sea from Jegadapttinam harbour in Mayiladuthurai district for crossing International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) on Monday. The fishermen were arrested near Karainagar around 20 kms from Jaffna. 

According to a report on The Hindu, the fishermen ventured into the sea on a boat with registration number INDTN08MM399 on Monday. During their journey, six fishermen including the owner of the boat were arrested by the Navy. 

The arrested were identified as K Karthik, P Devaraj, M Suresh, K Thirumeni, Velmurugan and Sundaram, all from Vanagiri village.

After the arrest, the fishermen were taken to Mayilatti harbour for questioning.

The arrest of the six fishermen comes after the arrest of 12 Indian fishermen near the Jaffna coast on July 3. 

All the arrests have also come at a time when there's severe economic crisis in the island nation.

Last week, eight more Sri Lankans reached Rameswaram and took the total number of refugees who entered Tamil Nadu after the economic crisis in the island nation to 100.

One of the refugees who entered Rameswaram said that she migrated to Tamil Nadu since she was put to suffer due to the unavailability of food, medicine and other essential items. She said that a kg of rice cost Rs 400 and there was an acute shortage of fuel.
