Amid Spike in Covid Cases, DMK Govt Extends Lockdown For One Week In Tamil Nadu

The panel of medical experts recommended the CM to extend the curfew for another two weeks as the incidence of infection is increasing in the state

Chennai: Taking medical experts recommendations into consideration, CM MK Stalin extended lockdown for one week without relaxations. With the curfew in Tamil Nadu coming to an end on Monday, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday consulted the panel of medical experts at the Chennai General Secretariat about the curfew extension. The medical experts recommended the CM to extend the curfew for another two weeks as the incidence of infection is increasing in the state. Adding to it, the medical expert recommended increasing restrictions. As of Friday, the daily impact in Tamil Nadu has crossed 36 thousand.

Earlier, speaking at the consultation meeting, the Chief Minister said, “Medical experts warn that the spread of Covid will reach its peak by the end of this month or the first week of June. The spread of the disease has been brought under control due to the measures taken in the last two weeks,” he said.

After the consultation with the Medical Expert Committee, Stalin will consult with the Legislative Party Member Committee of 13 MLAs. Following this, the Tamil Nadu government is expected to take a decision on whether to extend the curfew.

Despite various measures taken by the newly elected Tamil Nadu government, the incidence of the corona is on a rise. On Friday, there have been 467 fatalities which 36,184 people tested positive for Covid. With this, the total tally of a caseload of the state reached 17,70,988, and the overall number of fatalities recorded as 19,598. With the active cases stand at 2,74,629 the test positivity rate in rate is 21.8 per cent.

Accepting the advice of the medical team, it seems likely that Chief Minister Stalin will announce the curfew extension.
