Tamil Nadu: Food Safety Department Inspects Eateries, Hotels Across The State

A ten-year-old girl died due to food position after consuming stale biryani in Tiruvannamalai district. About 21 people who ate at the eatery were admitted at various hospitals.

Chennai: After a ten-year-old girl died due to food poisoning after consuming stale biryani in Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu food safety department has inspected hotels, eateries and roadside shops across the state. 

According to reports, the victim along with her family members consumed biryani and tandoor chicken at Seven Star Biryani centre. The girl and her father developed diarrhoea and stomach pain the next day and visited a nearby clinic for a check-up. However, her condition started to deteriorate and she was taken to Arni Government hospital. But doctors at the hospital declared her dead on arrival. 

A report in IANS said that at least 21 people who consumed food at the eatery were admitted at various hospitals after suffering from vomiting and nausea and doctors have confirmed that the complications were due to the consumption of stale food.

The report further said that shortly after the incident, food safety officials inspected the eatery premises and found that eatery management had stored about 15 kgs of stale chicken meals. Subsequently, the eatery was sealed and a criminal case was registered against the owner. 

Following the incident, Tamil Nadu food minister R Sakkarapani chaired a meeting with senior officials from the food safety department and ordered the officials to inspect the eateries. 

The officials in turn had inspected multiple restaurants, hotels, and roadside shops across the state and recovered a huge quantity of stale and contaminated food, the report said. 

Speaking to IANS, the minister said, "The state government is committed to taking action against those who served stale food to consumers.Stale and contaminated chicken meat was recovered from this eatery and we have sealed it down. Searches and raids are being carried out across the state."
