WATCH: Wayanad Congress Workers Celebrate SC Breather To Rahul Gandhi In Defamation Case

The Congress workers in Wayanad on Friday distributed sweets and carried out a celebratory march after the Supreme Court verdict in Modi Surname remark case.

The Congress workers in Kalpetta town in Wayanad district from where Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was elected as a Member of Parliament in 2019 rejoiced the Supreme Court verdict favouring Rahul Gandhi. The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the conviction of Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case registered in connection with 'Modi Surname' remark. The Congress workers in Wayanad on Friday distributed sweets and carried out a celebratory march.

The Congress workers chanted slogans celebrating the Apex Court verdict.

T Siddique, Working President of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee and MLA told ANI, "Actually, Modi Government tried to seal the mouth of every person, including Rahul Gandhi, from revealing and exposing the truth and Modi Government's failure. Now, the Supreme Court verdict has thrown away the seal which was imposed by Narendra Modi. We are very thankful to Supreme Court..."

Congress MLA and former Kerala LoP Ramesh Chennithala said, "The truth ultimately prevailed. The people of India and we all are happy today because ultimately the Supreme Court has given justice to Rahul Gandhi. He always said truth will prevail."

"The democracy of the country will be strengthened by this verdict and the people of Wayanad will be happy because they got their MP back," he told ANI.

In 2019, Rahul Gandhi made a remark during a meeting in Karnataka where he said that "All individuals with the 'Modi' Surname are theives". Following this, a BJP MLA Purnesh Modi initiated a defamation suit.

Surat metropolitan magistrate court ordered two years jail sentence for the remark.

Later, the Surat Sessions Court and Gujarat High Court declined to stay the conviction of Rahul Gandhi in the case. As a result, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as a Lok Sabha MP in March.
