The deceased worker identified as Sathish (34) from Erode got buried alive in a 13-foot drench while carrying out pipeline works at Ramamurthy Nagar in Madurai.

On Friday, while Sathish was working to lay the underground drainage pipe the loose soil suddenly caved in, said a report on The Hindu.

On seeing him, C Pragalanathan (52), an earthmover operator of the contractor, hurriedly used an earthmover to remove the soil in order to save Sathish. However, he unexpectedly chopped Sathish's head.

The police said, the head of Sathish was on the top layer of the soil and when earthmover removed a portion of the soil in the first attempt the head got severed and it came along with the soil.
