Madras HC Dismisses AIADMK’s Appeal To Convert Jaya’s Veda Nilayam Into Memorial

The bench, hearing the case said, there are several irregularities if the property should be acquired and converted into a memorial.

Chennai: The Madras High Court dismissed AIADMK's third-party plea challenging the Veda Nilayam ruling on Wednesday. A single-judge bench on December 2020 quashed the order to convert late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s residence into a memorial.

According to a report on PTI, the plea challenging the order came up for hearing before a division bench of Justices Paresh Upadhyay and Sathi Kumar Sukumara Kurup on Wednesday. The bench hearing the case said, there are several irregularities if the property should be acquired and converted into a memorial.

The bench also emphasized the single judge's view and said that there was no need for converting the Veda Nilayam into a memorial of the late leader. The move was just aimed at receiving political mileage, they said.

The bench also said that the present DMK government has accepted the order of the single judge and handed over the keys to Jayalalithaa's niece J Deepa and nephew J Deepak. Hence, DMK cannot be forced to continue with the acquisition, the court said and dismissed the appeal of AIADMK Villupuram district secretary CVe Shanmugam.

Meanwhile, the former AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa also has a memorial near Marina beach.

On December 10, Jayalalithaa's niece Deepa and nephew Deepak took possession of Veda Nilayam after a legal battle. After the High Court order, the officials of the Chennai Collectorate and police handed over the keys to the legal heirs of the late CM.

Deepa, after visiting the home said, the possession was a big win for them and said that if AIADMK continues to drag the private property she is ready to face the legal issues.
