In the wake of the recent Kallakurichi hooch tragedy that claimed 50 lives, Trichy Police have launched an extensive crackdown on the sale of illicit liquor. Acting on intelligence inputs regarding illicit liquor production in Thoriyur's Nesakuppam area, authorities seized 250 litres of illicit liquor.
The operation, led by the district collector and Superintendent of Police, involved the disposal of the seized liquor. In a public display of commitment to eradicating illicit liquor consumption, local residents were made to take an oath in front of the collector, pledging to refrain from consuming illicit liquor.

Justice Gokuldas Commences Inquiry
In a related development, Justice B. Gokuldas, who heads the one-man commission appointed to investigate the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, began his inquiry on Friday.
Justice Gokuldas visited the Kallakurichi Government Medical College Hospital as part of his preliminary inquiry. While declining to comment on the specifics of his findings at this early stage, he assured reporters that a comprehensive report will be submitted to the government within the stipulated three-month period, as reported by PTI.
On Friday, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin addressed the State Assembly regarding the tragedy, noting that of the 164 individuals affected, 117 are currently receiving treatment as in-patients across various hospitals, while 47 have succumbed to the effects of the illicit liquor.
