'If Tamil Nadu Governor Has Self-Respect...': DMK On RN Ravi Sending Re-Enacted Bills To President

After the SC verdict on Friday, Annadurai said that the Governor (RN Ravi) has not learned his lessons.

DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai criticized the Governor, asserting that even after the Supreme Court's rebuke, RN Ravi remained resistant to upholding the rule of law. Annadurai on Friday suggested that, if the Governor had any self-respect, he should have resigned and left Tamil Nadu.

On the Supreme Court questioning the decision of Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi to refer bills to the President, after declaring that he was withholding assent on them, DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai said, "The Governor (RN Ravi) has not learnt his lessons. Even after the Supreme Court's rebuke, the Governor refuses to budge towards the rule of law. He thinks he can get away with semantics. If he is a man with little bit self-respect, he would have resigned and packed his bags out of the state of Tamil Nadu."

On hearing on Tamil Nadu Government's plea against government action in delaying bills, DMK leader and Senior Advocate P Wilson says, "In Tamil Nadu matter, the Governor has been adopting a confrontational attitude which we were telling before the Court. In the first instance, the bills were passed by the Assembly and sent some three years back and the Governor was sitting over those bills."

"We came before the Court on the 10th, so the Supreme Court issued a notice asking for the status of not only these bills but also the orders to be passed in the remission of sentences...Today, when the matter came up the Attorney General informed the Court that on the 28th, the governor has reserved all the 10 bills for the assent of the Indian President. Our contention before the SC today is the governor should not have adopted such an act," he said.

On Friday, the Supreme Court rebuked Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi for returning 10 bills, passed by the Assembly, to the President for assent. The court questioned why the Governor referred the bills to the President after initially withholding assent. The bench emphasized that if the Governor had previously withheld the bills, he cannot send them for the President's assent after the Assembly re-enacts them.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra heard a plea filed by the Tamil Nadu government against the Governor for delaying assent to bills.
