Heavy Rain In Tamil Nadu, Puducherry Prompts School Closure In Some Districts

Several district administrations, including those of Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Villupuram in Tamil Nadu took precautionary measures by announcing rain holidays for schools on Tuesday.

Widespread heavy rainfall swept across various regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from Monday evening as a result of the onset of the northeast monsoon. In response to the inclement weather conditions, several district administrations, including those of Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Villupuram in Tamil Nadu took precautionary measures by announcing rain holidays for schools on Tuesday. Puducherry also declared a rain holiday for schools and colleges. 

On Tuesday (November 14), the India Meteorological Department also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore districts, and Puducherry due to the likely formation of a low-pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal. 

According to ANI, heavy rain lashed Tamil Nadu's Cuddalore; All educational institutions including professional colleges in Cuddalore District are closed due to rainfall.

 

Waterlogging was witnessed in parts of Nagapattinam city due to heavy rainfall.

In a press release, IMD said, "A Low Pressure Area is likely to form over Southeast Bay of Bengal during next 24 hours. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over Westcentral Bay of Bengal around 16th November, 2023."

As a result, IMD predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places of TN and Puducherry. IMD said, "Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram districts of Tamilnadu and Puducherry."

"Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Chennai, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi,
Perambalur, Ariyalur, Tiruchirappalli, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai districts of Tamilnadu and Karaikal area," it said.
