Fans Flock To Theppakadu To Meet Raghu From Oscar-Winning 'The Elephant Whisperers'

A tourist from London, Grace said that she learned that two baby elephants from Theppakadu won an Oscar and she was very lucky to see them today.

The documentary revolves around a couple and how they take care of an orphaned baby elephant Raghu

Chennai: On the day when the documentary 'The Elephant Whisperers' won Oscars award for Best Documentary Short Film, people from across the globe visited Theppakadu Elephant Camp to meet elephant Raghu from the documentary.

According to ANI, “After 'The Elephant Whisperers' won #Oscars award for Best Documentary Short Film, people from different parts of the country visit Theppakadu Elephant Camp to witness the Oscar-winning elephant Raghu.”

A tourist, Grace said, "I am from London, we visited here and learned that two baby elephants from here won an Oscar last night. It is nice to see them, and I really enjoyed seeing them. Elephants are my favourite animal. I am very lucky to see them today." 

The Elephant Whisperers is a short documentary directed in Tamil by filmmaker Kartiki Gonslaves and produced by Sikhya Entertainment. 

On Monday, the film won the Best Documentary Short Film Award at the 95th Academy Awards. The documentary revolves around a couple and how they take care of an orphaned baby elephant Raghu. The documentary set in Mudumalai also touches upon the way tribals live in harmony with nature.  

This is the first documentary from India to win the award under the category. The director of the movie, Kartiki Gonsalves stayed in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve for five long years to shoot the documentary.

Theppakadu Elephant Camp in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve is the oldest elephant camp in Asia. The camp was established 105 years back. The camp has 28 elephants and it is situated on the banks of river Moyar.
