Chithirai Festival 2023: Madras HC Orders Madurai Administration To Consider Plea To Close Tasmac

The petitioner said that during the time Tasmac liquor shops and recreation clubs should be closed for six days from April 30 to May 5 to curb criminal activities and maintain law and order. 

The Madras High Court has ordered Madurai district administration to consider a petition demanding closure of Tasmac liquor shops and entertainment clubs on the occasion of Chithirai festival in Madurai from April 30 to May 5, 2023.

According to ANI, “Tamil Nadu | Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has ordered the Madurai district administration to consider a petition filed by a BJP leader demanding the closure of Tasmac (liquor shop) & entertainment clubs from April 30 to May 5 on the occasion of Chithirai festival in Madurai district.”

The petition was moved by BJP functionary Maha Suseendran.

In the Public Interest Litigation, the petitioner had said that Chithirai festival was an important one and that a large number of people would attend the festival in the district. The festival would be celebrated for 15 days. 

The three major events of the festival are Thirukalyanam, car festival and Lord Kallazhagar's entry into River Vaigai, the petitioner said.

He also said that during the time Tasmac liquor shops and recreation clubs should be closed for six days from April 30 to May 5 to curb criminal activities and maintain law and order, said a report in Times of India. 

Chithirai Festival, also known as Chithirai Thiruvizha is an annual celebration in the city of Madurai during the month of April. The festival is about the union of the goddess Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, and Sundareshwar, a form of Shiva. Chithirai festival is also known as Meenakshi Kalyanam or Meenakshi Thirukalyanam.
