AIADMK, BJP Cadres In Tamil Nadu Celebrate As Parties Officially Part Ways — WATCH

After Tamil Nadu's AIADMK officially broke ties with the BJP-led NDA, party workers from both parties burst firecrackers to celebrate the end of the alliance.

New Delhi: After Tamil Nadu's AIADMK officially broke ties with the BJP-led NDA just months before the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls, party workers from both parties burst firecrackers to celebrate the end of the alliance.

Earlier in the day, AIADMK Deputy General Secretary KP Munusamy announced the split after a resolution was overwhelmingly agreed at a meeting of MPs, MLAs, and district heads at the party's headquarters in Chennai.

In a video shared by news agency ANI, BJP workers were seen bursting firecrackers in Madurai after AIADMK announced the breaking of its alliance with the BJP and NDA.

In another video, AIADMK workers hailed the move by blowing off firecrackers in Chennai.

Reacting to the development, DMK leader TKS Elangovan said, "The poor ED will expand their activities. That is what I say. They are happy now and they don't know what to do with these people. So, ED will expand its activities in Tamil Nadu. They (Centre) always target Opposition parties. Since AIADMK has also become an Opposition party, they will target them."

"They have taken this decision only because of Annamalai's speech. If Annamalai is changed, what will happen let us wait and see," he added.

This decision comes amid ongoing friction with the Tamil Nadu BJP leadership as AIADMK accused state BJP President Annamalai of "insulting" late chief ministers CN Annadurai and Jayalalithaa.

In a statement released today, the AIADMK conveyed the reasons for this decision, stating, "We are breaking our alliance with BJP and NDA as TN BJP leadership is continuously, purposefully defaming  AIADMK and its leaders Aringar Anna and J Jayalalithaa. We will form a new alliance and face upcoming Parliamentary elections."
