EMU Train Climbs Onto Platform at Mathura In Uttar Pradesh, No Casualty

An EMU train travelling from Shakur Basti of Delhi rammed into a platform in Mathura Junction, damaging the overhead electricity pole and platform 2A.

In a shocking incident, a train rammed into a platform in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura on Tuesday. An Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train arriving from Shakur Basti railway station in Delhi derailed and climbed at a platform in the Mathura Junction railway station on Tuesday night, according to ANI. However, no casualties were reported since everyone on the train had already deboarded when the incident occurred, including, passengers and loco-pilots. As per ANI, it reached the platform at 10:49 PM.

The Shakurbasti Mathura MEMU (04446) belongs to the Northern Railways, according to IANS.

As per ANI, Mathura Station director SK Srivastava said that the cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained. 

"This train comes from Shakur Basti. The train arrived at 10:49 PM. All passengers had deboarded the train. Suddenly the train climbed the platform. We are investigating the cause of this incident," he said.

According to IANS, the Agra division under which the Mathura station comes said the train had arrived at platform 2A and after five minutes it rolled ahead and broke the overhead electricity (OHE) pole. This also disrupted the power supply from the OHE and damaged the platform.

The incident also caused the trains on the upline to be affected.

A similar incident occurred last year in Chennai, Tamil Nadu when an EMU climbed Beach station, however, no casualties were reported. The empty rake was being moved from the yard to the platform and was likely to be proceeding on the busy Beach-Tambaram route, Southern Railway was reported as saying by PTI.

S Guganesan, Chief Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Southern Railway said that while placing the empty EMU rake from shethe d line to Platform 1, the rake overshot the buffer end of the platform and damaged the platform. The shunter jumped out of the rake and received no injuries. The platform shelter was damaged in the process and an “enquiry at the appropriate level will be conducted to assess the cause of the incident,” he added. However, brake failure is expected to be the reason behind the incident.
