Akhilesh Yadav Resigns As Karhal MLA After Clinching Kannauj Lok Sabha Seat

Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav won the Karhal seat during 2022 UP Assembly elections.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday resigned as the MLA from Uttar Pradesh's Karhal Assembly seat after winning the Lok Sabha polls from Kannauj constituency.

According to sources from ABP News, Tej Pratap Yadav, the former Member of Parliament from Mainpuri and nephew of Akhilesh Yadav, is set to assert his claim for the Karhal Assembly seat.

In a significant victory, the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh secured the Yadav family bastion of Kannauj in the recently-concluded Lok Sabga polls, garnering 6,42,292 votes and defeating the incumbent BJP MP Subrat Pathak by a margin of 1,70,922 votes.

Following his resignation, the SP leader will relinquish the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

It's worth noting that initially, Tej Pratap Yadav was nominated as the party's candidate for the Lok Sabha elections from the Kannauj constituency. However, the decision was later altered due to discontent among party workers, who advocated for Akhilesh to contest from that seat.

Akhilesh Yadav is slated to become the party's representative in the Lok Sabha, with the necessary procedures set to be finalised in Delhi.

Speaking to news agency PTI, party spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said, "It is understood that Yadav will be the leader of the party in the Lok Sabha but there is a formality of choosing the leader of the parliamentary party and this will be completed in Delhi."

"The formality of electing the leader of the parliamentary party will be completed after the swearing-in of the prime minister and the selection of the Lok Sabha's protem speaker," he added.

Following Akhilesh's win from Kannauj Lok Sabha seat, Chaudhary had confirmed that the SP supremo will resign as MLA from the Karhal seat in Mainpuri.
