DMK Minister's Slip-Up Sparks Speculation On Elevation Of DMK Scion Udhayanidhi As Deputy CM
Further, Minister Raja Kannappan quickly corrected himself, stating that he could only officially address Udhayanidhi as Deputy CM after August 19.
As Tamil Nadu’s political circles were abuzz with speculation that Udhayanidhi Stalin, the state’s Youth Welfare and Sports Minister might soon be elevated to the position of Deputy Chief Minister, the rumours gained traction after Rajan Kannappan, the state's Backward Classes Welfare Minister, referred to Udhayanidhi as the Deputy Chief Minister during a public event in Ramanathapuram on Friday.
Although Kannappan quickly corrected himself, stating that he could only officially address Udhayanidhi as Deputy CM after August 19, the slip of the tongue has fueled talk of an imminent promotion for the scion of the Stalin family. This has led many to believe that Udhayanidhi’s elevation could be just days away, according to a report on IANS.
Reports had previously surfaced suggesting that Udhayanidhi might be made Deputy Chief Minister before Chief Minister M.K. Stalin embarks on his scheduled U.S. tour on August 22. The trip is part of the state government's efforts to attract foreign investments.
When questioned about the speculation, Udhayanidhi downplayed the rumours. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Stalin, when asked by the media, stated that the time was "not ripe" for making his son the Deputy CM, as per the report. However, Stalin did acknowledge the growing demand within the DMK party for Udhayanidhi’s elevation, indicating that the possibility is on the horizon, though it may not happen immediately.
With less than two years remaining until the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, political observers suggest that Stalin might see Udhayanidhi as the natural successor to carry forward his legacy. Elevating him to the role of Deputy Chief Minister could be a strategic move to consolidate his position within the party and the state.
Currently, Udhayanidhi Stalin serves as the Minister for Sports, Youth Welfare, Special Programme Implementation Department & Poverty Alleviation Programme and Rural Indebtedness.
