Trichy News: At the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Trichy, a Wi-Fi technician was arrested on Friday for alleged sexual misconduct with a female student. The incident occurred on Thursday in the student's hostel room, leading to an overnight protest by NIT students, who demanded immediate action and an end to what they described as "victim shaming".
In a letter that went viral on social media, the survivor claimed that while she was sitting in her room, a worker entered to attend Wi-Fi related issue. Out of nowhere, she claimed that he started masturbating and flashed his private parts right in front of her. Further, she claimed, "When I came back, he was gone, but there was semen all over the floor. I even had a picture of it which I submitted at the police station."
The survivor also alleged that the college warden refused to take the incident into account and instead resorted to "victim shaming".
Following this, the students started to protest and it escalated quickly with students calling for the arrest of the technician and criticizing the handling of the situation.
On Friday, the overnight agitation subsided after the police arrested the technician and an official from the institution issued an apology.
Tiruchirappalli Superintendent of Police Varun Kumar stated, as per PTI, "It is crucial to determine how a male worker gained access to the women's hostel, especially as one of the cameras in the area was not functioning." He emphasized that the safety of women should be a top priority.
Following the arrest, women police officers have been tasked with probing female students to check for any similar incidents. This comes in the wake of a protest at a private college in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh where students alleged that an hidden camera was placed in the washroom of women's hostel in the campus.
