Cyclone Wipha To Bring Heavy Rain To Kerala; Yellow Alert In 8 Districts

Kerala and Lakshadweep are set to experience heavy rainfall due to a weather system linked to the remnants of Cyclone Wipha.

 Rain lashed most parts of Kerala and Lakshadweep over the past 24 hours, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing multiple warnings in the wake of a developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal, linked to the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Wipha.

Heavy rainfall was recorded in several locations across the state. Peerumedu in Idukki district reported the highest rainfall at 9 cm. Other notable figures included 7 cm each in Kayamkulam (Alappuzha), Kudulu (Kasaragod), and Sengulam Dam AWS (Idukki).

Seven-Day Forecast Indicates Continued Rain

The IMD’s seven-day outlook (July 23–29) predicts rain or thundershowers at most places in Kerala and Lakshadweep. The department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in isolated places across Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts on July 24.

Yellow Alert, Fishermen Warning In Kerala

Multiple alerts have been sounded for July 24 including Yellow Alert of 7–11 cm in 24 hours at one or two places across eight districts.

As part of fishermen warning, IMD said, rough sea conditions pose a risk to small vessels; fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. A high wave alert has also been issued for coastal stretches from Kunzhathur to Kotte Kunnu in Kasaragod, Kannur and parts of northern Kerala. Wave heights are forecast to reach 3.0 to 3.3 meters between 2:30 PM on July 24 and 8:30 PM on July 25.

What Is Cyclone Wipha?

Cyclone Wipha, though no longer active, continues to influence weather patterns in the region. The cyclonic circulation associated with the system is likely to re-emerge over the north Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. Subsequently, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the same region.

At 5:30 AM IST on July 23, the upper air cyclonic circulation persisted over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal, particularly impacting coastal Andhra Pradesh. An earlier east-west trough running from North Interior Karnataka to central Coastal Andhra Pradesh has weakened and become less prominent.
