Chhetri and the team won the 2022 Durand Cup by defeating Mumbai City FC in the championship game at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan. The 38-year-old was scheduled to accept the trophy as team captain following the game, as is customary for the ceremony.
Bengaluru's victory capped a successful season for Simon Grayson's team, who had previously won the I-League (in 2014 and 2016), Federation Cup (in 2015 and 2017), Super Cup (in 2018), and Indian Super League (in 2019).
