Tokyo Olympics: Boxer Lovlina Borgohain Secures Bronze Medal, India's Third At Games

This is India's third medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Mirabai Chanu secured a silver, followed by PV Sindhu's bronze in badminton.

The eyes of the entire country were glued on the TV screen as Lovlina Borgohain played her semifinal bout against Turkish pugilist Busenaz Surmeneli. Though she put up a spirited fight, her Turkish opponent just proved technically superior in the welterweight. With her bowing out in the semi-finals, Lovlina Borgohain has secured a bronze medal for India.

This is India's third medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Mirabai Chanu secured a silver through weightlifting, followed by PV Sindhu's bronze in badminton.

After her well-fought bout, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Lovlina and said her "tenacity and determination" is admirable.

In Round 1, Surmeneli began the bout by attacking Lovlina with huge uppercuts. Indian pugilist did not back down and advanced with counteroffensive but found herself at fault. The referee cautioned Lovlina twice as she continued landing punches after the referee stop. In Round 2, judges deducted a point from Lovlina's tally as she made the same mistake. In Round 3, Surmeneli finished things off by holding off Borgohain to clinch, securing her ways via unanimous decision.

Lovlina is only the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh (2008) and Mary Kom (2012) to win an Olympic medal. She is India's second woman boxer with an Olympic medal after MC Mary Kom. India secured a bronze medal at the Olympics from a boxing event after nine years.

Lovlina had reached the semi-finals defeating former world champion Nin Chin Chen of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals.
