David Willey Retires: England Star To Bid Adieu To International Cricket After World Cup 2023

David Willey Retires: The left-arm bowling all-rounder announced has taken the decision to retire from international cricket at 33 years of age.

England's bowling all-rounder, David Willey, has announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket. In a post on Instagram, Willey revealed that he would be stepping away from international cricket following the conclusion of the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign.

The 33-year-old all-rounder, who has featured in three of England's six matches in the ODI World Cup 2023, shared his decision on November 1, just three days after England's heavy defeat against India.

Willey made his ODI debut for the England team in 2015 and enjoyed an immediate impact, taking 1/25 in his first match against Ireland. He took to Twitter to officially announce his retirement from international cricket after completing his commitments in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. However, he intends to continue playing in domestic leagues such as the Indian Premier League (IPL).

"I never wanted this day to come. From a young boy, I've only ever dreamed of playing cricket for England," Willey wrote in an elaborate caption of hos social media post.

"So, with careful thought and consideration, it is with great regret that I feel the time has come for me to retire from all forms of International cricket at the end of the World Cup,"  he added.

David Willey Records And Career Highlights

So far, Willey has featured in 70 ODIs and 43 T20Is. The Northampton-born cricketer has scalped 94 and 51 wickets in them respectively. In addition, he has 627 runs at a strike rate of 93.30 in 50 overs cricket in the international arena, while another 226 runs at a strike rate of 130.63 in the game's shortest format at the highest level, enough to show his utility with the bat lower down the order. Overall, Willey has 270 wickets in as many T20 fixtures.
