Sawan Shivratri 2025 — Avoid These Mistakes During Shiv Puja To Bring Prosperity

Shivratri is observed on the Chaturdashi of both the Krishna and Shukla Paksha every month, the Shivratri that falls in the Krishna Paksha of Sawan is considered the most sacred.

The holy month of Sawan holds great significance for Lord Shiv devotees, and among its auspicious days, Sawan Shivratri is especially revered. While Shivratri is observed on the Chaturdashi of both the Krishna and Shukla Paksha every month, the Shivratri that falls in the Krishna Paksha of Sawan is considered the most sacred.

This year, Sawan Shivratri is being observed today, Wednesday, July 23, 2025. The Chaturdashi Tithi began at 4:39 AM and will end late at night at 2:29 AM. Devotees observing the fast will perform its conclusion (parana) on July 24 at 5:38 AM.

On this day, devotees worship Lord Shiv with full devotion, observing fasts, performing puja rituals, jalabhishek, and rudrabhishek. One of the key highlights of Sawan Shivratri is that devotees perform puja during all four 'prahars' (time divisions) of the night. However, it is essential to follow specific rituals and avoid certain actions during Shiv Puja, as any misstep may be considered disrespectful and could invite divine displeasure.

Here Are Some Mistakes To Avoid During Shiv Puja On Sawan Shivratri:

    • Avoid Wearing Black Clothes During Puja
Devotees should refrain from wearing black attire while performing puja. Instead, white or light-colored clothes are considered more auspicious for the occasion.
    • Do Not Offer Tulsi Leaves
Offering Tulsi (holy basil) leaves to Lord Shiv is prohibited. Ensure that you do not place Tulsi leaves on the Shivling during the rituals.
    • Do Not Use Turmeric
Turmeric is not offered to Lord Shiv. Unlike other deities who are offered yellow or red items, Shiv is worshipped with white or green items such as milk, curd, rice, belpatra, dhatura, and white flowers.
    • Avoid Damaged Belpatra
Belpatra (bael leaves) are considered extremely dear to Lord Shiv. However, offering torn or hole-pierced belpatra is not acceptable.
    • Do Not Use Broken Akshat
Only unbroken white rice (akshat) should be offered during Shiv Puja. Avoid using broken or yellow rice grains.
    • Do Not Use a Conch to Pour Water
Pouring water on the Shivling using a conch (shankh) is forbidden. Also, avoid using containers made of bronze, steel, iron, or aluminum to pour milk on the Shivling.
    • Avoid Lighting Lamps in Odd Numbers
Lamps (diyas) should be lit in even numbers—2, 4, or 6. Odd numbers are considered inauspicious in Lord Shiv’s worship.
    • Avoid Certain Flowers
While white flowers are preferred, never use Ketaki or Kevda flowers for Lord Shiv’s puja, as they are deemed inappropriate.
    • Do Not Circumambulate the Shivling Fully
A complete clockwise circumambulation of the Shivling is not advised. Instead, devotees should perform a semi-circumambulation and return, avoiding turning their back directly toward the deity.
    • Do Not Exit with Your Back Towards the Shivling
After completing the puja, devotees should walk a few steps backward before turning to leave. Exiting with your back facing the Shivling is discouraged.
