The defeat against Qatar has slightly hindered Sunil Chhetri-led India’s hopes for 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification, but India still have a chance to participate in the World Cup, considering that the Qualifiers are far from concluded at this stage.

Qatar lead Group A after defeating India and Afghanistan (8-1). Kuwait follow in second place after a 4-1 win against Afghanistan. India slipped to third after a 0-3 loss to Qatar, despite their earlier 1-0 win over Kuwait. Kuwait's better goal difference (+3) currently edges them above India (-2) in the standings.

India still have a chance to claim the second spot in Group A and advance to the third round of the World Cup Qualifiers in 2024 if upcoming match outcomes align in their favour.

Group A features all four teams competing in a double round-robin format from November 2023 to June 2024. To secure a spot in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and progress to the third round, Sunil Chhetri-led India football team must clinch a top-two finish in the group.

Should India secure a top-two finish, they'll enter the draw for the third round in 2024, contending against other group winners and runners-up. The top two teams from each group in this round will secure berths for the 2026 World Cup. However, if India doesn't secure a top-two spot, alternate opportunities arise. The third and fourth-placed teams in the third-round groups will progress to the fourth round for further contention.

During Round 4, the teams remaining from the third round are divided into two groups comprising three teams each. These teams compete in single matches at neutral venues against each other. The victors from each group secure a direct qualification to the World Cup, while the runners-up proceed to Round 5.

In Round 5, the teams participate in a two-leg series played on a home-and-away basis. The winner of this round qualifies directly for the inter-confederation play-off.
