Jeep Compass SUV Review

1/6
When first launched many years back, the Compass had crashed the SUV party in spectacular fashion with its build quality, design and 4x4 capability. It had the Jeep design and brand values instilled in it plus it was different from other SUVs- values which again would make the new Compass stand out amongst its tougher competition. Times have moved on and Jeep has adapted to that with the new Compass which can almost be called as an all new car. While the exterior design is more or less the same, save for some changes, the all new interior is what takes it to a higher segment in terms of luxury. (Image: ABP News)

However, we would first like to start with what's changed on the outside. We really like the menacing stance thanks to the chrome being taken off from the grille and even the badge! The seven slat grille is tweaked with special inserts which looks cool and yes, you can see the camera there! As per the norm it had new LED lights while the bigger alloy wheels also do their bit for improving the stance. What has not changed is the toughness and the quality as it looks and feels expensive. The same feeling is on the inside. Our test car was the fully loaded S model and the all black look with shiny chrome, leather and gloss black detailing really impressed us. The cabin looks like it belongs to the BMW X1/Volvo XC40 class. Everything is new here. The massive 10.1 inch touchscreen and the digital dials are just brilliant for starters. There are so many screens and choices to play with the digital dials while the main screen in the middle has a much slicker display too. Then there is the features list with everything and more thrown into the car. So you get a panoramic sunroof, dual powered seats with being cooled/ventilated, wireless smartphone connectivity, wireless charging, connected tech, a 360 degree camera, power liftgate, climate control and more. It would be tough to find an SUV at this price with more features than this one! Space is the same and while the rear doors are a bit small for easy getting in or out, the space inside is decent. While the Compass range gets both diesel and petrol options, we feel it is best sampled with the 2.0 diesel since that means you can also get it with the 4x4 and the SelecTerrain system. The 2.0 diesel makes 170 bhp and 350Nm while we had the 9-speed auto version with us. Compared to the manual, the automatic version is more relaxed and is lovely to be used either as an everyday commuter or a relaxed long distance cruiser. The diesel engine is slightly on the noiser side but you will like how smooth and responsive the gearbox is plus how well it makes for a capable yet user friendly SUV in terms of how it drives. The best bit is the tough suspension which makes it better suited for our roads than other SUVs. The ride is very nice and it feels tough along with being stable in corners. That has been a Compass USP from day one. (Image: ABP News)

The Compass has never been cheap and it is the case here too since the top-end model as tested here is upwards of Rs 28 lakh. That makes it slightly expensive but you can get cheaper Compass models while of course, they will not be as feature loaded. That said if you can afford it, the Compass in its top-end form is a worthy luxury SUV. It has the quality, the toughness and the 4x4 system, which, along with the features makes this an unique combo. Expensive, but worth it! (Image: ABP News)

What we like - Quality, design, features, suspension, performance; What we do not- Expensive for the top-end trim. (Image: ABPP News)
