FIR Lodged Against Rahul Gandhi, Other Cong Leaders For 'Violence' In Assam: CM Himanta Sarma

The case was filed hours after the chief minister directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to register a case against Gandhi for "provoking the crowd" to break barricades.

New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that a case has been registered against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, Kanhaiya Kumar, and other party workers for "violence, provocation, assault" during Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam.

Earlier today, a clash erupted between the police and Congress workers as Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra continued in Assam's Guwahati. This comes as the state government and the Congress locked horns over the rally in Assam with the grand old party alleging that the march was attacked by 'BJP goons' on Saturday.

In a social media post, Sarma said, "With reference to wanton acts of violence, provocation , damage to public property and assault on police personnel today by Cong members , a FIR has been registered against Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal , Kanhaiya Kumar and other individuals under section 120(B)143/147/188/283/353/332/333/427 IPC R/W Sec. 3 of PDPP Act."
The case was filed hours after the chief minister directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to register a case against Gandhi for "provoking the crowd" to break barricades. "I have instructed @DGPAssamPolice to register a case against your leader @RahulGandhi for provoking the crowd," the chief minister said which was in response to a post of Youth Congress president Srinivas BV.

Assam Chief Minister earlier today had said that state police will register a criminal case against Rahul Gandhi and will arrest him after the Lok Sabha election.

Following the clash incident between police and Congress workers at the Khanapara area, the Assam Chief Minister alleged that Rahul Gandhi had tried to enter Guwahati with around 3000 people and 200 vehicles.

"We can imagine what would have been the situation if 3000 people and 200 vehicles had entered Guwahati. For six days we were telling him to go by the route they are comfortable with but not to go through the middle route of Guwahati. Even after saying this, they (Congress workers) clashed with the police," Assam Chief Minister told reporters.

Gandhi is leading a Manipur-to-Mumbai Nyay Yatra of the party, which entered Assam from Meghalaya on Tuesday for the second and final leg of its travel through the state. It will travel through Assam till January 25.
