Amit Shah Calls All-Party Meeting On June 24 To Discuss Situation In Violence-Hit Manipur
The announcement came hours after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met the home minister in New Delhi.
New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened an all-party meeting in New Delhi on June 24 to discuss the situation in Manipur amid the ongoing violence since May 3. "Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShah has convened an all-party meeting on 24th June at 3 PM in New Delhi to discuss the situation in Manipur," a home ministry spokesperson tweeted.
The announcement came hours after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met the home minister in New Delhi. Sarma is also the convenor of the NDA's Northeast chapter NEDA (North-East Democratic Alliance). He had visited Imphal a fortnight back and met Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and a number of political leaders.
Meanwhile, intermittent firing was reported from two places in Manipur earlier in the day.
Around 15-20 rounds of automatic weapon fire was heard at 11.45 pm on Tuesday before it fell silent, at Thangjing in Manipur East, they said.
Sporadic firing was also reported from Geljang and Singda, both falling in Kangchup area.
"Between 8 pm and 9.30 pm, 4-5 rounds were fired from Geljan & Singda areas. It's speculative fire and not at each other. Distance between the two places is 2 km," an official said.
Assam Rifles personnel went to both the locations to find out if there were any injuries or casualties.
Four suspected cadres of the proscribed militant outfit United National Liberation Front (UNLF) were arrested in Thoubal district of ethnic violence affected Manipur, the Army said on Tuesday.
Notably, violent clashes broke out in Manipur after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
So far, nearly 120 people have lost their lives and over 3,000 are injured.
Amit Shah had also visited the state for four days last last month and met a cross sections of people in his efforts to bring back peace in the state.
