Pak: PM Imran Khan, wife Bushra Maneka, use helicopter for travelling to private residence; spark debate on austerity drive

Fawad Chaudhary defended Khan saying that PM Khan’s use of helicopter for his travel does not define VIP culture.

New Delhi:  Pakistan PM Imran Khan found himself mired in a controversy after news about him using official helicopters for his private visits surfaced in the media, contrary to his much-preached austerity drive. As per a report in Dawn News, Prime Minister Khan and first lady Bushra Imran used an official helicopter for travelling between Bani Gala (Imran’s private residence) and the Prime Minister House. The Pakistan government in defense termed the use of helicopters by the government officials an ‘official prerogative’, that does not go against the austerity drive. It has come to light that not only PM Khan but also Punjab CM Usman Bazdur uses official copters or private visit. The issue hit the news after photos of Bazdur travelling with his family members on a private plane surfaced on the social media. He also reportedly used an official helicopter for visiting his friend’s place to condole his father’s demise. The news has raised questions over PM’s claims of taking ‘austerity’ measures and living a simple life. Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhary defended Khan while talking to a private television channel yesterday. He said that Khan’s use of helicopter for his travel does not define VIP culture. He said that the security protocol for the PM travelling to Bani Gala would lead to nuisance for the commoners.  He said that the travel cost only 50 to 55 rupees for every kilometer, reported The Express Tribune. Fawad’s statement has also triggered a debate on the authenticity of these claims.
