'It's A Genocide': CM Mamata Banerjee On Cooch Behar Firing After Lashing Out At EC Over Ban On Visit

Cooch Behar Violence: Amid the fourth phase of voting, four men were shot dead in a clash with security forces. Both BJP and TMC attacked each other over the incident.

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was not allowed to visit Cooch Behar after the violence in the district's Sitalkuchi constituency, has hit out at the Election Commission and Centre.

Four people were killed outside a polling booth as 44 seats in Bengal voted in the fourth phase.

In a tweet, the West Bengal CM wrote: "EC should rename MCC as Modi Code of Conduct! BJP can use all its might but NOTHING in this world can stop me from being with my people and sharing their pain".

"They can restrict me from visiting my brothers and sisters in Cooch Behar for 3 days but I WILL be there on the 4th day!" she added.

As per news agency ANI, Mamata Banerjee was called the Cooch Behar incident a 'genocide' as she said: "It is a genocide. They sprayed bullets. They could have shot on the leg or the lower body but every bullet hit them in the neck or chest area".

"It's an incompetent government with incompetent PM and HM. They're coming here daily to capture Bengal. You are welcome, nobody has stopped you but make people happy rather than threatening them. You get people killed by central forces and later issue them a clean chit," she added.

On Saturday, the Election Commission had announced that no politicians will be allowed to enter the Cooch Behar district for three days. Amid the fourth phase of voting, four men were shot dead in a clash with security forces outside a polling booth. Both BJP and TMC attacked each other over the incident.

CISF issued a clarification over the issue and stated that the security forces were attacked by a huge mob and the firing was done in self-defence.

Election Commission also maintained the same as it said the CRPF opened fire to "save their lives and government property like EVMs"

"Due to the misunderstanding, the agitated mob attacked the CISF personnel detailed at the booth with deadly equipment and some of them even tried to snatch their arms and ammunitions," it added.

CM Mamata Banerjee has blamed Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the violence while PM Narendra Modi said that it was "Mamata Didi and her goons getting rattled as BJP is gaining the support of the public - they have stooped to this level".
