Union Minister Piyush Goyal Launches National Turmeric Board In Telangana's Nizamabad

The creation of the National Turmeric Board was initially announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 1, 2023, during a public meeting in Telangana.

The Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Tuesday inaugurated National Turmeric Board In Nizamabad of Telangana, coinciding with the auspicious Makar Sankranti festival. The launch held virtually was aimed at fulfilling the long-standing demand of turmeric farmers.

Highlighting the immense potential for turmeric cultivation in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Goyal emphasised that the Board would focus on improving productivity, developing superior varieties, and boosting exports of the 'Golden Spice', as per a report on PTI. The initiative aims to enhance the welfare of turmeric farmers and providing them with targeted support and infrastructure.

The creation of the National Turmeric Board was initially announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 1, 2023, during a public meeting in Telangana. This landmark decision reflects PM Modi's commitment to supporting farmers and recognising turmeric's significance in India’s agricultural economy, according to a statement from Nizamabad MP Arvind Dharmapuri’s office.

The Board addresses a 40-year-old demand from farmers who sought dedicated assistance for turmeric cultivation and trade. Over the past decade, Nizamabad turmeric prices averaged Rs 6,000 per quintal, but in 2024, prices surged to an all-time high of Rs 18,000 per quintal, a trend that continues into 2025.

The National Turmeric Board will focus on research and development, infrastructure development such as processing units, export promotion, and ensuring better pricing for farmers. The initiative is expected to strengthen the economy of North Telangana, particularly Nizamabad, and bolster India’s position in the global turmeric market.

Palle Ganga Reddy has been appointed as the first Chairperson of the National Turmeric Board, marking a new chapter for turmeric farmers in the region.
