SC Lifts Gauhati HC Order Of Putting A Stay On Wrestling Federation Of India Elections

The SC has put a stay on Gauhati HC order putting on hold the elections of the Wrestling Federation of India.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday lifted the Gauhati High Court order staying the Wrestling Federation of India elections, reported ANI. A bench of justices Aniruddha Bose and S Venkatanarayana Bhatti stayed the Gauhati High Court order and issued a notice on the petition, the news agency further mentioned. The apex court was hearing the Andhra Pradesh Amateur Wrestling Association petition challenging Gauhati High Court's interim order staying the WFI's election.

According to PTI, the counsel appearing for the petitioner told the bench that a third party appeared before the high court on Sunday and got the matter stayed. He added that the elections in the Wrestling Federation are getting delayed.

After hearing the arguments, the bench then proceeded to issue notice and stayed the high court order, PTI stated.

On Monday, the high court fixed July 28 as the next date for hearing the petition.

As per PTI, the WFI elections were to be conducted on July 11 but the Gauhati High Court had stayed the polls, following Assam Wrestling Association's (AWA) plea seeking right to participate in the election process.

The state association, in its plea, had claimed that it was entitled to be an affiliated member of the WFI with voting rights but it was denied recognition by the national federation despite its Executive Committee recommending the same on November 15, 2014. The Gauhati High Court had stayed the polls on June 25, the last date to submit names for the electoral college.

In another development, Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Vinod Tomar have been granted interim bail by Delhi's Rouse Avenue court in the case of alleged sexual harassment of wrestlers. The court appearance follows the summons issued against Singh and Vinod Tomar, former assistant secretary of the Federation. Singh arrived at the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi around 2 PM on Tuesday.
